The longer answer:
I do not accept insurance and am not paneled with insurance companies for many reasons, but these are the biggest:
1. Many insurance companies require “medical necessity” for pursuing therapy/counseling, which essentially means you must have a medical reason or diagnosis for therapy if you wish for your insurance to pay for it. Not everyone who pursues therapy has a diagnosable mental health condition, nor do you need to have one in order to be a good candidate for or to receive value from therapy. Insurance companies do NOT pay for therapy for personal growth.
2. Many insurance companies will place strict limits on the amount of sessions they will cover as well as any other behavioral health benefits they offer. Many clients need more sessions than what insurance companies are willing to cover. This allows insurance companies to exert control over YOUR sessions, including how long we meet.
3. If an insurance company is paying for sessions, they are entitled to the details of the content in our sessions. I refuse to explain to a third party (whose main objective is making/saving money) what we have been talking about so they can determine its validity or if you are progressing by their standards.
4. Insurance companies are notoriously slow in reimbursing therapists and commonly underpay therapists.
The Good Faith Estimate provision of the No Surprises Act of 2022 is designed to give consumers predictability in how much they will be charged for the healthcare services they will be receiving, prior to their appointment. You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
- Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
- If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
